As the world's smallest writing advice provider on Medium and Substack and a lot of other places, I also had to contend with the shift from Medium being great to Medium being very-not-great (I went from an income of around $300 a month - real grocery and bill money - to $18 a month). I ported everyone over to Substack and while I'm much more productive and happier, I'm struggling on the conversion end.

It's still good, love it to pieces, but I didn't appreciate how great old-Medium was until it was gone.

So sorry to hear about your earnings loss, John. No one deserves that. Smart move coming over here, though. Substack is a much slower burn, revenue-wise, but I LOVE its approach to content delivery and audience building.

Wow I’m sad and worried about this. I’ve just begun to build an audience over there and here too. Thank you for this explanation... it’s really making me think...

It’s not impacting everyone, Karen - don’t be too dispirited 😉 It’s a time to experiment. What niche do you write in?

you're so kind to say that! thank you... I won't be dispirited at all. I write about multi-hyphenate living, the musician and performer life and social media for creatives. I am an avid Apple user and that's how I found you.

I finally upgraded to a paid subscription, see my private message. Like you, I've serious concerns about the future if Medium, although I'm nowhere near as invested as you are (we're?). Time to refocus I think.
